About Us
Formed in 1991, the Community Services Agency (CSA) of the Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO coordinates labor union locals in DC, Maryland, and Virginia to support local families, meet community needs, and work towards an equitable social safety net for all.
We build broad and diverse coalitions to promote dignity and justice for all workers and to empower working families to make their communities better places to live, work, raise a family, and retire. CSA is the successor organization to the Labor Agency of Metropolitan Washington.
We serve workers and families in the areas served by the Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO and the Northern Virginia Labor Federation, AFL-CIO. That includes DC, Northern Virginia, and the Maryland counties of Montgomery, Prince George's, Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary's.
We are a campaign participant in the United Way of the National Capital Area, the Combined Federal Campaign, the DC ONE Fund, and the Maryland Charity Campaign.
Founding Partnership
Since 1946, the AFL-CIO and United Way Worldwide have worked together to provide services to members of organized labor, their families, and their communities.
This national partnership sets out to:
Help fellow union members by training union volunteers to assist coworkers and their families with information about available local services and to refer them to the appropriate organizations.
Boost labor input in area health and human services decision-making by recruiting, training, and helping union members advocate with the decision-making bodies of local agencies to strengthen the community safety net.
Boost union-member giving for community support by soliciting contributions from workers through their worksite giving campaigns.
Link labor agency and labor liaison programs across the country to broaden assistance for workers and families and boost community safety net programs using shared best practices.
Multiply local support for the annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Food Drive held on the second Saturday in May. The drive, the biggest national food drive in the country, stocks local community food banks, pantries, and shelters with donations that Letter Carriers collect from customers along their mail routes. The food drive, started by NALC in 1991, is in collaboration with the U.S. Postal Service and the AFL-CIO.
Develop local community activists through the Union Community Activist Network (UCAN) to work locally for economic advancement and equity for all, to build the pool of labor volunteers for community projects, and to advocate for adequate social safety nets and programs for anyone in need in our communities.
